Council leaders are celebrating the signing of the 250th ‘chuggers’ agreement to help improve the behaviour of street fundraisers.

According to LG News;

The agreement was launched last year by the Local Government Association (LGA) Public Fundraising Regulatory Authority (PFRA) following concerns over the behaviour of some face-to-face charity collectors. Canterbury City Council has now signed the 250th agreement to regulate street fundraising.

Cllr Nick Worth, the LGA’s regulation spokesman, said: ‘By working with charities, councils have been able to strike a sensible balance between charities’ need to ask people for support and the rights of local people not to be pressured to give. This allows local authorities to decide the fundraising conditions which suit the exact needs of their area and respond to the specific concerns of local communities.

‘The 250th local site to be covered by an agreement is a significant milestone and it is encouraging that they are already having a real impact within communities in reducing complaints.’

Research published last year found complaints dropped by almost two-thirds in areas covered by an agreement.
