The report, The Hidden Costs of Poor Quality Housing in the North, found that there are 997,000 non-decent owner-occupied homes in the North of England, 24% of the total stock.

This is in addition to 345,000 private rented sector properties that fail to meet the Decent Homes Standard, 27% of the total stock.

Written by the Smith Institute –  half of all non-decent homes in the North have at least one person with a long-term illness or disability – well above the average for England.
