A north London council is considering offering up to £20,000 to tenants considering a move abroad.
Harrow Council has mooted the idea at a tenants’ and residents’ meeting as a way of freeing up stock in its borough.
The cash would be available for people who were already considering a move for a range of reasons, including to retire or live closer to a relative.
Harrow Council portfolio holder for housing Bob Currie said this was just one of a raft of ideas in the early stages of development being considered.
‘Many different cash incentive schemes are being considered in order to free up vital housing stock,’ he said. ‘Other ideas include incentives to move to smaller homes and into the private sector.
‘Harrow has one of the smallest stocks of social housing in London and it is in high demand. The council would not be doing its duty if it did not consider all sorts of different ideas to ensure we are able to provide the best housing options for our residents.’
Mr Currie also stressed if the plan went ahead it would be completely up to the tenants whether they took part in the scheme.
