Free WiFi is to be rolled out in central Manchester as part of a deal between the city council, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Arqiva. Unlimited access to public sector websites and up to 30 minutes of Internet access will be made available through the _FreeBeeMcr network, which is set to see installation in the next week in high footfall public spaces.

After further city centre locations are linked to the network, a second phase of roll-out – commencing in spring 2013 – will incorporate transport hubs and stops along key train, bus and Metrolink routes.

In summer 2013, the WiFi network will be extended to other popular areas of the city including district shopping centres.

The council hopes that such Internet access will help residents use local businesses, services and destinations.

Executive member for environment at Manchester City Council, cllr Nigel Murphy, said: ‘Providing improved Internet access for Manchester residents, businesses and visitors promotes social inclusion and economic growth. We want to ensure that Manchester residents and visitors get the most out of the city and giving them free WiFi access will mean they have a wealth of information and services at their fingertips. This will make another important contribution towards our goal of ensuring that Manchester is one of the world’s leading digital cities.’

Chair of the TfGM committee, cllr Andrew Fender, said: ‘Smart technology has a vital role in keeping people connected and informed with TfGM ambitious to make the most of it for the benefit of our passengers and visitors travelling in the city. This city centre WiFi roll-out is a key part of our vision and one example of where it can make a difference is via our new Metroshuttle app’
