The government is delaying a decision on ending lifetime tenancies for housing associations, as it plans deregulation to remove the sector from the public balance sheet.
According to Inside Housing
“An amendment was slipped into the Housing and Planning Bill which will limit new secure tenancies to between two and five years.
However, as secure tenancies are only granted by councils, the position for housing associations would have been unchanged by the legislation.
Today the government confirmed it wants the same changes to apply to housing associations but is concerned about the impact on the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) opinion of their status.”
