The Audit Commission has launched another swipe at Whitehall by asking how much more financial pressure local authorities can take.
A report by the commission published today said one in four of England’s councils were at high-risk of financial trouble.
The commission did not reveal the identities of the 116 local authorities in the danger zone.
Just two out of three of England’s 353 councils are now well-placed to deliver their medium-term financial plans.
‘Three in ten (28%) present a future financial risk,’ auditors warned. ‘Nearly one in ten (8%) present a current and ongoing financial risk.’
