A statutory duty for local authorities to report potential victims of modern slavery could be introduced, Prime Minister David Cameron has said.
Mr Cameron said the measure could be part of an upcoming Modern Slavery Bill, according to LG News.
The Prime Minister hinted at the new statutory duty in an answer to a question by chair of the home affairs committee, Keith Vaz.
Mr Vaz highlighted the fact that 60% of child victims of trafficking go missing from local authority care, which he described as an ‘astonishing figure’.
Mr Cameron replied: ‘On the issue of children and how the care system interacts, that is all up for discussion because we have not yet finished what will be in the bill.
‘I think that actually there will be a statutory duty for local authorities to report potential victims of modern slavery.’
