The government is set to regenerate up to 100 housing estates in England, says David Cameron .
According to Inside Housing:
The prime minister announced a £140m fund to “jump start” regeneration projects, which will attempt to “radically transform” “the country’s most run-down housing estates”.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Mr Cameron for some developments “this will simply mean knocking them down and starting again”.Others will receive changes to their layout, facility upgrades, and improved local road and transport links.
Within these so-called sink estates, behind front doors, families build warm and welcoming homes. But step outside in the worst estates and you’re confronted by brutal high-rise towers and dark alleyways that are a gift to criminals.
Decades of neglect have led to gangs and anti-social behaviour. And poverty has become entrenched, because those who could afford to move have understandably done so.”
The prime minister claimed that “spatial analysis” of the 2011 riots showed almost three quarters of convicted rioters lived in postwar housing estates. It is unclear what data Mr Cameron was using to make this claim. Inside Housing has sought to clarify this with the government.
