Three areas have been selected to take part in a government-backed scheme to build thousands of homes near railway stations.

York, Taunton and Swindon councils were named as local authorities that will take part in an agreement between Network Rail and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to identify railway sites and surrounding land for housing development.

As part of the plans, the HCA and Network Rail will work with the local authorities on their proposals “to explore how government can support them to deliver locally-led regeneration and development schemes quickly”.

The government said the initiative could eventually lead to the building of 10,000 new homes.
