The Housing and Planning Bill has received Royal Assent after Lord Bob Kerslake withdrew the remaining opposition amendment.

The crossbench peer had tabled an amendment to give councils “sufficient” funding to replace affordable homes sold off to fund the extension of the Right to Buy discount to housing association tenants. He pushed his amendment to a vote yesterday in the House of Lords and peers voted 256 to 245 in favour.

However, MPs voted to reject the amendment and Lord Kerslake withdrew it in the Lords debate.

Lord Kerslake said: “Any contest between this house and the other place will be an unequal one. That is at it should be. They are elected and we are not. However, that should not dissuade us from making our case on issues that matter.
