Housing Minister Grant Shapps has announced proposals to allow local authorities to house families in the private rented sector, providing safeguards in the quality of the accommodation are met. The consultation is part of the Homelessness (Suitability of Accommodation) Order.
The move comes in response to a need to tackle housing waiting lists which have doubled in 15 years.
Private landlords will have to meet stringent safety measures relating to gas, fire and electrical safety, take precautions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and hold a valid Energy Performance Certificate for the property. Landlords must produce a written tenancy agreement which meets the requirements of the local authority.
