Conservative backbench MP Alec Shelbrooke has proposed through a Private Member’s Bill, to introduce a ‘welfare cash card’ that would restrict access to claimants’ spending.
Only priority purchases such as food, clothing, energy, travel and housing would be allowed with restrictions placed on, so called, luxury goods such as cigarettes, alcohol, and Sky television.
Alec Shelbrooke said the introduction of a ‘welfare cash card’ would support the introduction of universal credit and the change from fortnightly to monthly welfare payments.
