The cross party Communities and Local Government Select Committee, chaired by Labour’s Clive Betts, has just published its report into into the role councillors play in their communities. The report is wide ranging, making a number of recommendations on issues such as:
- the devolution of power and resources to local councillors
- the need for greater diversity to ensure that councillors are seen be fully representative of their communities
- the practical barriers to people becoming and remaining councillors
- the support and training that councillors receive.
