The latest tranche of the government fund to tackle rough sleeping has been awarded to 22 communities. Housing minister Mark Prisk announced 23 charities would receive grants totalling £3.6 million to launch no second night initiatives in their areas.

The scheme was started in London in April 2011 and aims to stop anyone new to the streets spending a second night there. The Communities and Local Government department pledged the £20 million transition fund in July 2011 to help roll out the scheme nationally.

Homeless Link said more than 2,000 people are estimated to be sleeping rough on any one night in England. Hotline Streetlink, launched in December 2012, where members of the public can report the sighting of a rough sleeper, had been contacted more than 4,000 times so far.
