An freedom of information (FOI) requested by an environmental charity has found that around one in four dwellings for private rent have an energy document that landlords are legally obliged to get, according to Inside housing

10:10 asked the Department for Communities and Local Government about Energy Efficiency Performance certificates in the private rented sector and the response estimates only a quarter of private rental homes had an EPC when they were let.

EPCs show the energy usage of the building and also tips on how to improve it.

75 per cent of social rent homes have the certificates, however only 26 per cent in the private rental sector do, according to the FOI.

The charity said in its response to the FOI that the DCLG is ‘doing little to enforce the law on EPCs’.
