On 11th July, the Prime Minister announced a new consultation on public services.
“The Open Public Services White Paper sets out how the Government will improve public services. By putting choice and control in the hands of individuals and neighbourhoods, public services will become more responsive to peoples’ needs.”
The White Paper sets out the government’s approach to public services by applying five key principles:
- Choice – wherever possible we will increase choice
- Decentralisation – Power should be decentralised to the lowest appropriate level
- Diversity – Public services should be open to a range of providers
- Fairness – We will ensure fair access to public services
- Accountability – Public services should be accountable to users and taxpayers
There are some interesting ideas which i am sure you will want to comment on in the PM’s speech below like:
- “which magazine” getting involved in public sector
- a new role for the Ombudsman
- public services, outside defence and policing being more open to competition and choice
