Tenants in arrears as a result of the bedroom tax will not be evicted unless they decline two offers of alternative accommodation, under new council proposed.

Thanet District Council will vote next week on plans to support tenants hit by the government’s controversial welfare reform.

The proposals include a commitment not to take legal action against tenants in arrears because of the bedroom tax, until two offers of a smaller property have been made.

The council also plans to make 25 per cent of its stock available on direct lets for tenants who want to downsize .

The plans will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on 14 November.
