A campaign has been launched after a survey revealed more than half of Londoners living in high rises do not have a fire escape plan.
Accordng to LG News:
London Fire Brigade’s poll discovered there are no plans in place in 60% of all high rise homes across the capital – around 760,000 households.
It has responded with a year-long Know the Plan campaign targeted at raising awareness among landlords and residents. A dedicated website, www.knowtheplan.co.uk, outlines what to do in the event of a fire as well as guidance for landlords.
Following an inquest into the deaths of six people as a result of a fire at a block of flats in Camberwell, Southwark, in 2009, the coroner called on London Fire Brigade to raise public awareness of fire safety.
James Cleverly, chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, said: ‘Landlords and housing providers with legal responsibilities for flats and maisonettes in purpose built blocks need to act right now to ensure their residents are safe and understand what to do in a fire.’
